TEHRAN – ShanghaiRanking included 34 Iranian universities from more than 1,800 out of 5,000 universities in 96 countries and regions in the 2022 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).
ShanghaiRanking began publishing global university rankings by academic subject in 2009. Introducing an improved methodology, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) was first published in 2017.
The GRAS 2022 contains rankings of universities in 54 subjects in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine and social sciences. More than 1,800 out of 5,000 universities from 96 countries and regions are finally included in the ranking.
The GRAS Rankings use a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of universities worldwide in their respective subjects, including Research Performance (Q1), Research Impact (CNCI), International Collaboration (IC), Research Quality (Top), and international academic awards.
The International Academic Awards Index is based on the Academic Excellence Survey (AES) conducted by ShanghaiRanking since 2017. As of March 2022, more than 1000 professors from the world’s leading universities have participated in the survey. Their answers have garnered 180 top journals in 52 subjects, 36 top awards in 29 subjects, and 31 top computer science & engineering conferences.
The field of natural sciences includes mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, geography, ecology, oceanography and atmospheric sciences.
The field of engineering includes mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and electronics, automation and control, telecommunications engineering, instrument science and technology, biomedical engineering, computer science and engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, nanoscience and nanotechnology, energy science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, water resources , Food Science and Technology, Biotechnology, Aerospace Engineering, Ocean and Marine Engineering, Transportation Science and Technology, Remote Sensing, Mining and Mineral Engineering, and Metallurgical Engineering.
The field of life sciences includes life sciences, human biology, agricultural sciences and veterinary sciences.
The field of medical sciences includes clinical medicine, public health, dentistry and oral sciences, nursing, medical technology, and pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.
And the field of social sciences includes economics, statistics, law, political science, sociology, education, communication, psychology, business administration, finance, management, public administration, hotel and tourism management, and library and information science.

Most recently, 41 Iranian universities of engineering and 12 universities of computer science have ranked among the 1,188 best universities in the world by subject with the announcement of the Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.
It also included 59 Iranian universities among the top institutions in the 2022 World University Rankings.
The Times Higher Education Young University Ranking 2021 lists 26 Iranian institutions among the world’s top universities that are 50 years old or younger.
In addition, according to Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2021, around 34 Iranian universities and institutions have been ranked among the top 1,000 in the world.
The 2022 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities ranked 694 Iranian institutions among 30,000 top universities around the world.
