Rohit Sharma Equals Babar Azam’s World Record Of Scoring

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma created history on Wednesday (January 17) during the third T20I against Afghanistan, which was played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The right-handed batter became the first cricketer in T20I history to score five centuries. Rohit faced a total of 69 deliveries against Afghanistan and scored 121 runs. During his stay at the crease, he scored 11 fours and five sixes. The 121-run knock by Rohit is his career-best performance in T20Is, and it also helped India get the better of Afghanistan in the final T20I before the T20 World Cup and win the series by a margin of 3-0.

With his century in the third T20I, Rohit also equaled a world record set by star Pakistani batter Babar Azam. The Indian superstar now has three centuries as captain in T20Is. During his stint as Pakistan’s captain, Babar also scored three centuries. Babar’s first T20I century (122 from 59 balls) as Pakistan’s captain was on April 14, 2021, against South Africa in Centurion, whereas his second and third T20I centuries were against England (110* from 66 balls on September 22, 2022, in Karachi) and New Zealand (101* from 58 balls on April 15, 2023, in Lahore).

Rohit scored his first T20I century as Indian captain on December 22, 2017, against Sri Lanka in Indore. In that game, he made 118 runs from 43 deliveries. Rohit’s second T20I century (111* from 61 balls) as captain came against the West Indies in Lucknow on November 6, 2018, and on Wednesday (January 17, 2024), he slammed his third T20I century.

The total of 121 runs in the third T20I against Afghanistan is Rohit’s best score in T20Is and the fourth highest individual score by an Indian batter in the shortest format of the game. Apart from equaling Babar’s world record, Rohit broke Virat Kohli’s record of scoring 1570 runs in 50 T20Is as India captain. Thanks to his 121, Rohit now has 1647 runs to his name in 53 T20Is as India captain.
