The Mines and Minerals Department of the Punjab government has imposed a fine of 160 million rupees on the City Housing Society Jhelum and has also lodged an FIR against the housing society.

According to sources, the private housing society was fined for more than two billion rupees in assets. However, officials of the Mines and Minerals Department converted the fine into only 160 million PKR through kickback. According to sources, a notice was sent to the City Housing Society Jhelum during the tenure of Punjab Chief Minister Pervez Elahi in 2022, but it was forcefully withdrawn by the Assistant Director.

According to details, the Provincial Mines and Minerals Department fined the City Housing Society Pvt limited under the Punjab Mining Rules 2002 on May 29, 2024, for 20.6 million PKR. On June 4, 2024, the Mines and Minerals Department sent a second notice to the City Housing Society Jhelum in Tehsil Chatta No. 6 for illegal mining, with a fine of 5.1 million pkr. The Mines and Minerals Department issued a third show-cause notice to the City Housing Society Jhelum on June 8, 2024, with a fine of 130.79 million PKR.

According to the contents of the notices sent by the Mines and Leasing Department, the City Housing Society Jhelum carried out illegal mining in the area of its G Block, violating the mining rules. The Mines and Minerals Department says that the private housing society not only engaged in illegal mining of valuable minerals but also illegally sold them and used them in its other construction projects, and this practice is still ongoing.

On the other hand, the Deputy Director of the Mines and Minerals Department has also lodged an FIR against the City Housing Society on April 27, 2024, for stealing minerals. The Deputy Director of Mines has filed a case under the Punjab Mining Rules at Kalagujran Police Station in Jhelum for illegal mining.

Chaudhry Zafar Iqbal, who obtained the lease to extract minerals from the land in the possession of the City Housing Society, has also accused the society of stealing minerals worth billions of rupees. It should be noted that under the supervision of the City Housing Society, 9 different housing projects are underway throughout Punjab.

The Secretary and Director-General of the Mines and Minerals Department have repeatedly contacted the Global Ratings in writing and verbally to take a stance on the issue of mineral theft by housing societies, but the responsible officials of the Punjab Mines Department have not yet given their position. The Chairman of the City Housing Society, Aamir Malik, and CEO Mr. Zoraiz Malik have also not taken a position on the illegal mining and fines imposed by the government on their housing society.
