Spain’s head coach, Corey Rutgers, expressed pride in the team’s achievement
Spain has set a new record for consecutive T20 International (T20I) victories with their latest win over Greece at the Europe T20 World Cup Sub Regional Qualifier C in Guernsey. The Spanish team secured their 14th consecutive T20I win, breaking the previous record of 13 consecutive victories set by Malaysia in 2022.
Spain’s winning streak began 20 months ago, following their last defeat to Italy. Since then, they have achieved 15 wins across series against the Isle of Man, Jersey, and Croatia. Their current run includes three wins at the ongoing qualifier, with their only interruption being a no result due to rain in a match against the Isle of Man last year. Notably, Spain recorded a record-breaking 10-wicket victory against the Isle of Man in their fourth fixture, dismissing the opposition for just 10 runs and completing the chase in only two legal deliveries.
Spain’s head coach, Corey Rutgers, expressed pride in the team’s achievement, saying, “A proud record to be notified about today, we obviously don’t play for records but this does feel special for the group. It has been a transformative few years in Spain, and a lot of credit goes to players who sacrifice a lot of their time to play for Espana, the management and my coaching staff. Couldn’t be prouder of all involved.”
Despite their impressive streak, Spain faces a challenging path to the European Regional final next year. A rain-affected abandonment in their match against Denmark earlier this week means Spain needs Cyprus to beat Denmark in their final group match to advance. If Denmark wins, they will secure a spot in the final due to their superior net run rate, which would leave Spain in the bronze medal match against either Finland or possibly Guernsey. Rutgers acknowledged the situation, saying, “Unfortunately that’s cricket. We didn’t win convincingly in our first three games. We will have to learn a hard lesson and come back stronger in the future.”
Spain’s record for consecutive T20I wins brings them closer to the all-time record for most consecutive matches unbeaten, currently held by Nigeria with a 16-match streak interrupted by a rain-affected game against Tanzania. The record for consecutive T20I victories is held by Thailand Women with 17 wins.
