Looking Back on England’s Record-Breaking 2022 Series Win
By: Adeel Khursheed
England’s cricket team, led by Ben Stokes, is set to return to Pakistan for a three-Test tour, starting in Multan on Monday, and will be looking to replicate their historic 3-0 series sweep from two years ago. That series saw England’s “Bazball” brand of cricket shine, with a dominant performance that broke multiple records.
RECORD-BREAKING FIRST TEST
The first Test in Rawalpindi was a memorable one, with England achieving several milestones on the first day:
- First team to score 500 runs on day one of a Test match
- 506 runs, the fifth-highest total all-time on any day’s play
- New record high in Pakistan, beating the previous record of 417
- Zak Crawley scored the fastest hundred by an England opener (off 86 balls)
- Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook also scored centuries
England eventually scored a massive 657 runs in their first innings, with Pakistan replying with 579, including centuries from Babar Azam, Imam-ul-Haq, and Abdullah Shafique. However, England quickly scored 264 in 35.5 overs, setting Pakistan a target of 342, which proved too much for the home side.
ENGLAND’S DOMINANT PERFORMANCE
James Anderson and Ollie Robinson shared eight wickets, with Anderson taking 4-36 and Robinson 4-50, as England secured a comprehensive win. This set the tone for the rest of the series, which saw England sweep Pakistan 3-0.
