Pakistan Launches Satellite-Based Broadband Internet Rivaling Elon Musk’s Starlink

Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its space program with the successful launch and operation of PakSat-MM1, the country’s first multi-mission satellite. This satellite marks Pakistan’s entry into the realm of space-based broadband services, representing a major leap forward in the nation’s technological capabilities.

Shaza Fatima, Pakistan’s Minister of State for Information Technology, made the announcement, coupling it with news of the country’s first National Space Policy. The minister underscored the critical role of PakSat-MM1 within this new policy framework, highlighting its potential to revolutionize connectivity across Pakistan, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

Fatima emphasized the satellite’s importance in addressing one of Pakistan’s persistent challenges: providing internet access to rural regions where traditional infrastructure development has proven challenging. The minister expressed optimism about the transformative potential of this technology, suggesting that it could lead to significant advancements in key sectors such as education and healthcare through increased digitalization

SUPARCO Chairman Yusuf Khan and PakSat CEO Khalid Rashid have lauded the satellite’s wide-ranging capabilities. According to their statements, PakSat-MM1 is set to deliver a comprehensive suite of services, including broadband internet, telecommunications, and data transfer.

Khan and Rashid emphasized that PakSat-MM1 is expected to significantly improve internet speeds nationwide. Moreover, the satellite’s ability to provide 5G coverage addresses the longstanding challenges of high costs and logistical complexities associated with developing traditional telecom infrastructure in hard-to-reach regions.

In a bold projection, Khan and Rashid suggested that the successful implementation and utilization of PakSat-MM1 could potentially boost Pakistan’s GDP by up to 2.5%.
