New Zealand pulled off a shocking 58-run victory over India in their Women’s T20 World Cup opener on Friday. The White Ferns, who had only won one of their previous 13 T20 internationals this year, stunned their opponents by first scoring a challenging total of 160-4 and then bowling out India for just 102 in 19 overs.

NEW ZEALAND’S BATTING PERFORMANCE

Captain Sophie Devine starred with the bat for New Zealand, scoring an unbeaten 57 off 36 balls with seven boundaries to propel her side to a match-winning score. Devine’s strong finish followed a solid foundation laid by openers Georgia Plimmer (34 off 23) and veteran Suzie Bates (27 off 24). The team smashed 51 runs off the final five overs to set a challenging target for India.

CONTROVERSIAL MOMENT

A brief dispute stopped play when India thought they had run out Amelia Kerr, but the umpires ruled it a dead ball. Kerr was dismissed two balls later, but her reprieve didn’t impact the outcome.

INDIA’S CHASE

India’s chase got off to a poor start, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur (15) trapped by Rosemary Mair inside the powerplay. Mair claimed the last two wickets of the match, off successive balls, while fast bowler Lea Tahuhu chipped in with 3-15 to help bundle India out with an over to spare. Kaur’s 15 was the top score of a disappointing innings.
